2019 Advent Calendar – December 19: Mississippi River Delta, Louisiana, USA

On December 19, let’s go to the United States to explore the Mississippi River Delta in Louisiana. The Delta covers an area of 75,000 sq.km. with more than 40 km from east to west and 200 km from north to south. The river stretches for nearly 3,800 km and ends its journey in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Mississippi River Delta is the 7th largest river delta on Earth. About 2.2 million people live in that region. Most of them are concentrated in the city of New Orleans, on the south shore of Pontchartrain Lake.

Did you know? The name “Louisiana” was given by the French René-Robert Cavelier who, on behalf of Louis XIV, King of France from 1643 to 1715, declared French sovereignty over this basin by naming it “La Louisiane”.
