2019 Advent Calendar – December 22: Mount Taranaki, New Zealand

Departure for New Zealand in the Taranaki region for December 22 (only two days to go before Christmas!).

On this stunning satellite image, we can see the imposing Mount Taranaki (2,518 meters) located on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island, in the heart of Egmont National Park. Its conical shape is considered one of the most symmetrical in the world!

The mountain has two names, “Taranaki” which is its Māori name and “Egmont”, the British name which still applies to the national park that surrounds the peak.

As you can see in the satellite image, the change in color and vegetation between the volcano and the surrounding area is sharply delineated. Why? Egmont National Park protects a mostly-circular area around Mount Taranaki.  This allows the preservation of the subtropical forest while intensively-farmed dairy pasture extend throughout the surrounding plain. The region is exceptionally fertile thanks to generous rainfall and rich volcanic soil.

Laurent, CEO of PlanetObserver, loves this image. He finds the contrast between the different shades of green really striking. This satellite view is graphically very unique, as it features different circular shapes, from the coast on the west side to the National Park boundaries and Taranaki Mountain in the centre.
